Staff, roles and rights

What a person may do on your server, in the game and in Odyssey Server Admin, comes from rights: one each for saving maps, banning, warping players, editing scripts and so on. Rights come in roles, and you give people roles.

The first owner#

A new server has nobody in charge until someone claims it. On the server's own computer, Odyssey Server Admin needs no sign-in and can do everything. From anywhere else, press Claim this server on the sign-in screen and give its setup code, which the server writes to its log each time it starts and to setup-code.txt in its data folder. Then choose how to own it:

  • Website account: your Odyssey account becomes the owner.
  • New account: make an account on the server there and then. You can play with it too. This needs no website account, and works for a server that is not listed.
  • Existing account: an account already on the server, such as a converted world's god whose password nobody remembers, given a new password. Its characters and roles stay as they are.

The code makes one owner, once. The owner of a server's website listing can also claim it by signing in.

Roles#

A world starts with eight roles:

RoleWhat it is for
Server OwnerEvery right. It cannot be changed or deleted, so an owner can never be locked out of their own server.
HelperGod chat and warping, to get players unstuck.
Associate AdminA Helper who can also kick players.
AdminAn Associate Admin who can also ban players for a while.
Senior AdminAn Admin who can also ban for good, edit bans, send messages to everyone, reset maps and set the message of the day.
Associate Map EditorWarping, kicking, and editing maps.
EditorEditing maps, items, NPCs, monsters and guild halls.
Senior EditorAn Editor who can also ban, edit scripts and disband guilds.

They are a starting point. Under Roles, you can rename any of them but Server Owner, change what each grants, delete them and make your own. Each right in a role is Granted, Denied or Off. Denied takes a right away even when another of a person's roles grants it; Off leaves it to their other roles. Restore the default roles puts the eight back as a new server has them.

A change reaches everyone who holds the role at once, in the game as well.

Only the Server Owner role can use the admin app from another computer to start with: that takes the UseAdminApp right. Give it to a role, or a person, for staff who should.

Giving someone a role#

  1. Open Players and find the person by a character's name or by their own.
  2. On Roles & rights, switch on the roles they should have.

Roles and rights belong to the person, not to one character, so they cover all of their characters. Below the roles, a single right can be granted or denied to one person directly; most people need none.

Scripts can hand out roles too, with GiveRole and TakeRole, though never Server Owner.

Playing as an ordinary player#

/god off sets your god powers aside, and /god on takes them back. In between, commands, editors and scripts treat you as any other player, and monsters notice you. It lasts across signing out. God chat still reaches you, so you can be called on.

Looking after players#

On a player's page in Players:

  • Items lists what each character carries and wears. Give an item, change a stack or an item's wear, or take one away, whether the character is in the game or not.
  • Account gives a player on a server account a temporary password, for one who has forgotten theirs. They choose their own at their next sign-in. A player with a website account changes their password on the website.
  • Bans lists and changes the person's bans: see bans.
  • Tags are words scripts put on a character, such as SpellCaster for whoever finished a quest. You can add and remove them here too. They give no rights.

Joining two accounts#

A player from a converted world can join their old account to their Odyssey account themselves, if you allow it: see old accounts and new. For one who cannot prove the old account is theirs, the Server Owner can join the two by hand, under Join with another account on the player's page. It cannot be undone.

Names#

Under Names:

  • Reserved names are names no character may have: your staff's, the server's, or an NPC's that players might take for a player. A character that already has one keeps it.
  • Held names are kept for the player who had them, after a rename or a deleted character, so nobody else can take one while friends still know them by it. The player it is kept for can take it back. Release frees one early.

How long names are held, 30 days to start with, is set under Server configuration, Accounts and characters. 0 holds none.
