Bans and the master ban list

There are three kinds of ban in Odyssey, and they are decided by different people. Only the first is yours.

Banning a player from your server#

In Odyssey Server Admin, open Player administration, find the player, and choose Ban.

  • Give a reason. The player is shown it when they try to join, so write it for them.
  • Make it permanent, or give it a length. A ban's length counts from when it was made.
  • If they are in the world, they are removed at once.

The Bans tab lists everybody who is banned. From there a ban can be edited, lifted, or put back. A lifted ban stays on record, with space for a note on why. Those notes are for you and your staff, and are never shown to the player. They are what the next person looking at a returning troublemaker will want to read.

A ban on your server affects your server only. The player can still play everywhere else.

The master ban list#

Odyssey's admins keep one list for the whole game, for people who have earned more than a ban from one server: cheats, and people who harass others wherever they go.

Your server follows it unless you say otherwise. A player on the list who presses Play on your server is refused before they reach it.

The switch is Use master ban list, in Odyssey Server Admin under Server configuration, Server options.

  • On, the default: banned players are kept out for you.
  • Off: your server makes its own decisions, and a player on the master list can join it. Your own bans still apply.

Either choice is a fair one. Turning it off does not affect your listing.

If your server is banned#

A server that breaks the rules of the registry can be taken off it by Odyssey's admins.

A banned server:

  • is not in the server list, on this site or in the game;
  • cannot be joined with Play;
  • still runs. Players who have its address can connect to it directly, and its world is untouched.

You will know. The Registry page in Odyssey Server Admin says the server is banned, and why. So does the server's page under My servers, and the server writes it in its log.

Both show a link to appeal on the discussion board. If the ban is lifted, the server is back on the list at its next check-in, without you doing anything.

If a player says they are banned and should not be#

Ask which message they saw.

  • A ban from your server shows the reason you gave. It is on your Bans tab, and yours to lift.
  • A ban from Odyssey says so, and gives a link to appeal. You cannot lift it, and should not try to work around it for them. If you believe it is a mistake, say so on the discussion board.
